What happens when we approach sparring not as a fight to win, but as a field for exploration?
This is the central question at the heart of the workshops developed at White Belt Academy. By practicing martial arts and movement in a mindful and attuned way, we give ourselves and our training partners time and space to experiment, try new moves, and take risks. When we shift our intention from winning to learning, the distinction between success and failure blurs and every movement becomes meaningful.
In this process of self-mastery, we open the door to deep states of being which have been described in various non-dualistic traditions over the centuries: Wu-wei in Daoism – Beginner's Mind in Zen – Yoga in Patanjali's sutras – Gelassenheit in Meister Eckhart – Faith in Alan Watts – amor fati in Stoicism.
All these concepts point towards a state of being which remains after we have pealed off the layers of our mind. It is a state of spontaneity, creativity and childlike fascination. It is the realm of un-knowing, where all of learning truly takes place. It is a gift that keeps giving without us needing to do anything.
We just let the process unfold. And we catch ourselves when we try to interfere with this process – this is mindfulness.
Are you curious to experience this yourself? You are very welcome to join a workshop. All workshops are accessible to beginners, and at the same time each builds upon the next.
