Listening Takes Form

A Contact Improvisation workshop with Niku Dhillon

Why we invited Niku

Part of what keeps Contact Improvisation alive is meeting teachers from outside our own room. Niku brings a practice that weaves somatic listening, core CI principles, and a real curiosity about what happens when we stop trying to steer the dance. We're glad to open our floor to that, and to keep Den Haag in exchange with the wider international CI community.

About the workshop

There is a magical state in Contact Improvisation where thinking melts into listening, decisions release into flow, and we find ourselves delighted by the dance as it unfolds.

We begin with a generous warm-up and activation: waking the tissues, mobilizing the joints, tuning in to sensation, so that our listening, curiosity and playfulness have somewhere to land.

We will incorporate the biomechanics of CI, exploring pathways of support, weight and movement. We bring that tuned attention into moving connection, listening to ourselves, our partners, and the dance emerging between us.

We’ll finish weaving the threads together in dynamic group exploration, making space for technique, impulse, listening, and play to meet.

Open to anyone with some CI experience. The jam afterwards is open to all, and will be on the beach if the weather allows.

About Niku

Niku Dhillon has been dancing Contact Improvisation for over thirteen years, with roots in Contemporary Dance at the University of Calgary.

He loves cultivating warm spaces where people can explore with intentionality and play, and is curious about dance and life at the improvisational edge.

He has enjoyed teaching CI across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and is delighted to be back in europe. Outside dance, he trains facilitators to hold transformative spaces and looks to CI communities for insights into building a brighter future in the age of AI.
