About this event
Ngoni Weekend Workshop with Victor Sams @ Volkshotel, Amsterdam
Join us for a special two-day journey into the world of the ngoni — the ancient string instrument from Mali that has inspired musicians across West Africa and beyond. The workshop is guided by Victor Sams, an artist and cultural ambassador from St. Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean.
Victor is a singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges African tradition and Caribbean roots. Known for his deep sense of rhythm and soulful teaching style, he has spent years sharing the language of African music through workshops, performances, and study trips to West Africa.
This weekend offers a rare chance to explore the ngoni in an open and inspiring setting — whether you’re picking it up for the first time or looking to deepen your practice.
What to Expect
The kamele ngoni, meaning the “youth harp” of Mali, is made from a gourd, goatskin, and fishing line. Its sound is earthy and meditative, carrying a long history of connection between people, music, and nature.
Over two days you’ll learn:
- How to tune and play your first rhythm (for beginners)
- How to play and sing simultaneously, with focus on rhythm and traditional melodies (for advanced players)
- Group singing and ensemble playing with the ngoni
- A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where every level can grow
No experience is needed — just curiosity and a love of rhythm.
